Pro-Tech Malibu vs Godfather: Flipper or Automatic?
Two of the most asked-about Pro-Tech knives in our case, and they work completely differently. The Malibu is a manual flipper; the Godfather is a push-button automatic. What that means for carry and shipping.

Pro-Tech is the brand our customers search for most. It comes from Anaheim, California, and is known for fit and finish that feels like a custom knife at a production price. Two models come up constantly: the Malibu and the Godfather. They look like siblings but work completely differently.
The one-sentence answer
The Malibu is a manual flipper. The Godfather Auto is a push-button automatic. Everything else follows from that.
Pro-Tech Malibu
- How it opens: a flipper tab on the spine. A quick pull of the index finger swings the blade open on bearings. No spring, no button.
- How it closes: a frame or button lock, depending on the version.
- Feel: slim and modern, with a blade around 3.25 inches in most versions. A dress-carry knife that still does real work.
- Shipping: because it is a manual knife, it can go to far more addresses than an automatic.
- Variants: Pro-Tech makes the Malibu in many handle colors, steels and limited runs. Our green 5403 is the one that has been getting a lot of attention lately.
Pick the Malibu if you want a Pro-Tech that you can carry anywhere, give as a gift out of state, or simply prefer the feel of a flipper.
Pro-Tech Godfather Auto
- How it opens: press the button on the handle and the blade fires open under spring tension.
- How it closes: press the button again and fold the blade back into the handle.
- Feel: a classic Italian-stiletto silhouette, longer and more dramatic than the Malibu. Pro-Tech makes it in finishes from plain satin to the black-and-white "Tuxedo".
- Shipping: automatic knives are legal in Texas, but shipping them is restricted in some states and cities. Our checkout checks your address before you pay. Where we can and can't ship an automatic.
Pick the Godfather if you are in Texas (or a state that allows automatics), want the one-handed drama of a button auto, and like the classic look.

- No. The standard Malibu is a manual flipper: you open it with a tab on the back of the blade. That's why it can ship to far more addresses than an automatic.
- Is the Pro-Tech Godfather an automatic?
- The Godfather Auto is a push-button automatic. Press the button and the blade fires open; press it again to close. Automatics are legal in Texas, but shipping them is restricted in some states and cities.
- Can you ship a Pro-Tech Godfather to me?
- It depends on the destination. Checkout checks your address against our restriction list and blocks automatics where they can't go. Manual knives like the Malibu aren't affected.
