OTF Knives Explained: How Out-the-Front Automatics Work, Who Makes the Good Ones, and Texas Law
How an OTF knife fires and retracts, the difference between single- and double-action, why Microtech sets the standard, where CobraTec, Benchmade and Pro-Tech fit, and what Texas and other states allow. From the automatic case at Austin Blade Co.

Nothing in the case gets picked up more than an OTF. The blade fires straight out of the handle with a thumb slide and returns the same way, and the sound alone sells a few every week. Here is how they work, what separates a $60 one from a $400 one, and what the law says.
How an OTF works
An out-the-front knife carries its blade inside the handle on a carriage. The thumb slide tensions a spring; at the end of the slide's travel the spring releases and throws the blade forward until it locks at full extension. Pull the slide back and the same thing happens in reverse.
- Double-action OTFs fire and retract with the slide. This is what nearly everyone buys.
- Single-action OTFs fire with a button and are reset by a charging handle. Faster, stronger lock-up, more expensive, and rare outside Microtech and a few customs.
Because the spring, not your hand, does the work, a double-action OTF is built to give way if the blade meets resistance as it fires. That is why a poorly timed fire against a surface leaves the blade half out and loose: it is the knife protecting itself. Pull the blade out by hand to reset it.
Who makes the good ones
Microtech (Pennsylvania) set the standard and still holds it: tight tolerances, serialized, and the best resale value in the category. New Microtech reaches us when allocations allow; pre-owned and discontinued pieces come through more often. If you want one OTF for life, this is where to look.
Benchmade (Oregon) makes the Infidel and Mini Infidel, with a double-edged dagger blade and the same lifetime warranty as the rest of the line. Heavier in the hand than a Microtech, which some people prefer.
Pro-Tech (California) is better known for side-opening automatics, but its OTFs share the same hand-fitted feel.
CobraTec (Texas) is where most people start: solid, affordable, with replacement blades you can swap at home. The small FS-3 fits a front pocket; the full-size models feel closer to the premium knives than the price suggests.
What to look for at the counter
- Blade play at lock-out. Fire it and wiggle the blade. A little is normal on a double-action; a lot is not.
- Slide effort. It should be firm and positive, not gritty.
- Blade steel. D2 and 154CM on the entry models; M390, CPM-20CV and MagnaCut on the premium ones.
- Blade shape. Dagger for a pure OTF look, drop point or tanto for a knife you will actually cut with.
- Hardware. A glass breaker and a solid clip are standard on the good ones.
Texas and everywhere else
Texas has allowed automatic knives since 2013, so every OTF on our shelf can be bought over the counter and carried in the state. The limit that applies is the general one: blades over 5.5 inches cannot be carried into schools, bars, government buildings and a few other places.
Shipping is where the map matters. Several states ban automatics outright and a few cap blade length. Our state-by-state guide lists them, and checkout checks the address before you pay rather than leaving it to you.

Common questions
- Are OTF knives legal in Texas?
- Yes. Texas removed its switchblade ban in 2013. OTF and side-opening automatics can be bought, owned and carried in Texas; blades over 5.5 inches are restricted in a few locations like any long blade.
- What is the difference between a single-action and a double-action OTF?
- A double-action OTF fires the blade out and pulls it back with the same switch. A single-action fires out and must be retracted by hand with a charging handle. Almost every modern OTF people buy is double-action.
- Why do OTF knives sometimes fail to lock out?
- Double-action OTFs are designed to disengage if the blade hits something as it fires, so it does not break the mechanism. Pull the blade out by hand to reset it. If it happens on a clean fire with nothing in the way, the knife needs service.
- Can you ship an OTF knife to my state?
- To most states. A handful ban automatics and a few cap blade length; our state-by-state guide lists them and checkout checks your address before you pay.
