Case XX Vintage Knives at Austin Blade Co.
Folding hunters, stockmen, trappers and peanuts, dated by the stamp on the tang.
Case has stamped its tangs with a dating system since the 1940s, which is why collectors can pin a knife to a decade and why a 1940s 6265 folding hunter in red bone sells for what it does. We keep a rotating shelf of Case XX: Tested XX, XX USA, the dotted stamps of the 1970s and 1980s, and modern Case for people who want the pattern without the premium.
Each knife is checked for blade wear, snap, blade play and handle cracks, and the listing names the stamp. Bring your own Case in and we will date it for you at the counter.
Questions we get at the counter
- How do I tell how old a Case knife is?
- By the tang stamp. 'CASE TESTED XX' is pre-1940, 'CASE XX' 1940 to 1964, 'CASE XX USA' 1965 to 1969, and from 1970 the stamp carries dots that count down the decade. Our guide walks through each era.
- What does the pattern number on a Case knife mean?
- The first digit is the handle material, the second the number of blades, the last two the pattern. A 6265 is bone-handled, two blades, folding hunter pattern.
